If you are about to start on the GCSE music course at school or maybe you’ve just started then now is the time to get as much knowledge about the subject as you can.
Obviously the best information will come from your teacher at school and I must also highly recommend the Edexcel books on the subject.
For a completely different take on the subject, and in words that you can understand, our own book called “I Wish I Could Pass My GCSE In Music” is the perfect backup.
Firstly it contains the basics you need before you can really understand music at all. Especially if you are going to write music. This includes
After you have studied the above you will know where the notes are written, what names are given to each note and where to find those notes on the music or on the keyboard. You will know how to play the notes. Whether to play them loud, soft or in between. Whether to play them smoothly or detached (staccato).
You will know when to play the black notes by the use of the key signature or accidentals. And know how long to hold a note for (its value or duration), and when to take a rest and for how long.
You will also know how fast to play by using the timing directive and following the tempo markings.
And finally you will know what a tie, a pause or a slur is and what NC means.
That covers most of the basic stuff. If there’s anything you don’t understand, or if there’s anything else you need an explanation of, you can always send me an email. (free advice)
